The Burnout Signs Crews Miss Until It's Too Late

Burnout at sea doesn't always look like collapse. Sometimes it looks like an officer who's stopped double-checking things they used to double-check, or a cadet who's gone quiet in a mess room that used to make them laugh — and by the time it's obvious, it's already been building for weeks.

Isolation, long contracts, and irregular sleep create real mental health risk — and the maritime industry has been slow to say that out loud. That's changing. More companies now include mental health support, confidential counseling lines, and connectivity for family contact as standard, not extras, in contracts.

The signs worth watching in yourself and shipmates: withdrawing from meals or conversation, uncharacteristic irritability, sleep that doesn't restore, or a flattening sense of humor. None of these are weakness. They're data.

If something feels off, say it to one person before it becomes everyone's problem. A five-minute conversation with a trusted crewmate, a company counselor, or a service like ISWAN can be the difference between a hard week and a hard year.

Strength at sea has never meant silence. It means knowing your own signals well enough to raise a hand before someone else has to notice for you.
