Salary Negotiations in Maritime: How to Ask for What You Are Worth
Money stays taboo in much of the industry, and not negotiating can cost tens of thousands across a career.
Money is still a taboo subject in many maritime cultures — but not knowing your worth, or failing to negotiate, can cost you tens of thousands over the course of a career. Here's how to approach it professionally.
Know the Market Before You Negotiate
You cannot negotiate effectively without data. Use:
- NextMariner salary insights (where available)
- Industry salary surveys from recruitment firms (Faststream, Spinnaker, etc.)
- Peer conversations at industry events
- Job advertisements that list salary ranges (increasingly common in Europe due to pay transparency legislation)
Know the range for your role, your geography, and your experience level — and aim for the upper half if your skills are strong.
When Does the Conversation Happen?
- First interview: Salary may come up early. It's acceptable to give a range or say "I'm open to discussing what's competitive for this role."
- Offer stage: This is where you negotiate. Never accept the first offer without at least acknowledging you'd appreciate flexibility.
