Build a Maritime Profile That Gets You Noticed
Recruiters scan hundreds of profiles a week. Here is how to make yours one of the few they stop on.
Your digital professional profile is your first impression — and in maritime, that impression matters more than ever. Recruiters from shipping companies, offshore operators, and crewing agencies scan hundreds of profiles every week. Here's how to make yours stand out on NextMariner.
Start With a Clear Headline
Don't just write your job title. Write what you do and what value you bring. Instead of: "Marine Engineer"
Try: "Marine Engineer | LNG Specialist | 8 Years with Tier-1 Ship Managers | Open to Shore-Based Roles"
This instantly tells a recruiter your specialism, your experience level, and your availability.
Your Profile Photo
In maritime, first impressions count — especially across cultures. Use a professional, clearly lit photo where you're in appropriate attire. A smile signals approachability. Avoid photos on boats in bright orange survival suits (unless your role is offshore safety). You are a professional, not just a seafarer.
Write a Compelling Summary
This is your 30-second pitch. Write it in the first person, keep it under 200 words, and answer:
- Who are you professionally?
- What are you known for?
- What kind of opportunity are you looking for?
Example: "I'm a port operations manager with 12 years of experience across European and Asian terminals. I specialize in container throughput optimization and have led digital transformation projects at two major terminals. I'm currently exploring strategic roles in terminal management or maritime consultancy."
List Certificates and Competencies
Maritime recruiters are trained to look for specific certificates. Always list:
- STCW certificates (with endorsement dates if applicable)
- Class or flag state endorsements
- Software proficiencies (ECDIS, VoyageManager, ShipManager, etc.)
- Language skills — crucial in international maritime
Ask for Endorsements
Ask colleagues, managers, or captains you've worked with to write a short endorsement of your skills on your NextMariner profile. Even two or three strong endorsements dramatically increase recruiter confidence.
Keep It Updated
Update your profile every time you complete a new project, certification, or role — even if you're not actively looking. The maritime world is smaller than you think, and opportunity often arrives when you're not looking for it.
Pro Tip: Profiles with a complete summary, photo, and at least five listed competencies receive 3x more recruiter contact than incomplete profiles.
